Lake Norman Junior League

The league was created to provide junior players with an opportunity to play on the golf course and as an introduction to competition.  I want the players to have fun and also learn what is involved in playing in a tournament.  I have conducted junior competitions for over 30 years and found that the best way to learn is to play by the Rules of Golf.  We will strive to do that in these events.  I don’t expect kids to know all the Rules (most adults do not) but we will learn as we go.  Below are basic guidelines regarding the events.

  1. The first thing involved in playing in a tournament is to enter! Every tournament, even the ones played on television, has an entry deadline.  The deadline for our events will be 8 days prior to the event, and it will be strictly enforced.  Late entries will not be accepted.
  2. The second requirement is to show up on time. In every tournament, players are assigned a starting time.  The starting time means the player is on the tee ready to play at that time.  The Rules of Golf are very specific about the player’s responsibilities and the penalties involved in being late for a starting time and that can include disqualification.  Please plan to arrive at the course at least 30 minutes before your assigned starting times.
  3. Similarly, in every tournament, pairings are made by the tournament committee. Players do not get to choose whom they play with.  One should not expect to always play with his or her friends.  Boys and girls may be playing together.  Learning to play with players you do not know is part of golf.
  4. In real tournaments, you do not have “official” scorekeepers. The scorekeeper for each player is another player!  A player competing in a tournament is always responsible for knowing how many strokes he or she has taken on a hole AND for keeping up with the strokes of another player.  This is tough for kids at first, but they learn.
  5. Players in a golf tournament need to learn to be self-sufficient. All players will be required to carry their own bags or use push carts.  Caddies are not permitted.
  6. Parents and other spectators are encouraged to come and watch their children play. However, spectators will need to remain on the cart paths and are not allowed to give advice to the players during play.  Spectator carts are not permitted.

Players will need to learn to play quickly.  I will strive to make the golf courses as easy as possible for the players to play at an acceptable pace for the golf course.
